Welcome to Harmony Nanaimo! 

Harmony Nanaimo, also known as the Nanaimo chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), has been singing and serving Central Island communities for more than 50 years. Our style of a cappella singing (without instruments) takes in a wide range of popular musical selections. 
 

Coaching Weekend 2026 

Registration is now open for Harmony Nanaimo’s second annual Coaching Weekend, April 24 and 25, 2026. Singers and directors with an interest in a cappella music are welcome.

This event will take place at St. Paul’s Church in downtown Nanaimo. We have arranged  accommodation at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel across the street. 
The cost is $75 plus an optional $25 for Saturday lunch and dinner. The program:


April 24, 1:30 pm to 9:00 pm: Quartets coaching, Personal Voice coaching, vocal technique classes.

April 25, 8:00 am to 5:30 pm: Choruses coaching, Quartets coaching, Personal Voice coaching, vocal technique classes, Directors coaching, roundtable, open classroom quartet class.

This year's faculty:

Donny Rose is an influential clinician, adjudicator, and presenter whose leadership in music education spans more than four decades. Since the mid-1980s, he has been a featured voice at major conferences and events all over the world.

Amy Rose is an accomplished presenter, emcee, clinician, coach and competitor. She is a life-long singer and 25+ year barbershopper, having participated in Sweet Adelines, BHS and Harmony Inc as a staff member with the BHS.

Dr. Philip Grant is an internationally recognize expert in arts leadership and choral music, currently serving as the Executive Director of VanCity Harmony and as a board members of Choral Canada.

Donya Metzger is a certified Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework®(FV) and has been teaching privately for 19 years. Her specialty is the intersection of excellent technique and expressive performance.





Marty Lovick is a BHS Performance judge and coach who has practised his craft all over the world, including 15 times on the international contest panel. He has been a judge since 1986, and a coach of several international champions.

Alex McDonald, a barbershopper since the age of 11, Alex has sung and competed in many quartets and choruses. He directed the Tidesmen chorus for 8 years and is known to be a gifted coach.

About Harmony Nanaimo 

We have two choruses and numerous quartets. The photo above shows members of the Tidesmen Chorus and the Rising Tide All Voices Chorus at our show in Qualicum Beach in December 2023, with Mac Dallman leading an audience singalong.

Harmony Nanaimo is a chapter of the international
Barbershop Harmony Society, joining 14,000 other society members across North America. We are active within the Society's Evergreen District (Pacific Northwest), and have regular musical meetings with South Island Harmony, our sister chapter in Victoria, B.C.

Harmony Nanaimo is also a member and supporter of Nanaimo Sings!, an organization that promotes choral singing and presents quality choral events.
